How do I join the band?
 
 
To join the band at the beginning of 6th grade school year, just show up in the band room during the designated related arts time. We will introduce you to the band instruments, test your ability to produce sounds in test instruments, and recommend what instrument is best suited for you. Shortly after testing we hold a parent meeting to review all the details of obtaining an instrument and what to expect in school band and in after school commitments.

Can I join band later if I don’t join in 6th grade?

Unfortunately, not in most cases. The 6th grade band is the only opportunity for every student to become part of the band. This age is agreed by many education specialists to be the best time to begin instrumental music study. There is an ideal balance of youth and maturity around the 6th grade year, making it ideal for beginning instruction on musical instruments.

What instruments are taught in the beginning band?

Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone and Percussion.

How do I know that I can play a musical instrument?

Everyone has some level of musical talent. It can either be developed or left dormant. The directors will help you identify the ideal instrument for you; based on your preferences along with physical, academic, behavioral and other factors. Things like the shape of your lips, mouth, teeth, size of hands, length of arms, etc. will all be considered to find the best instrument for you.

Can I be in band and other activities?

YES! Many of our highest achieving band students are also involved in football, cheerleading, basketball, drama and other activities. Parents and students should think of the next few years as the time when students begin to expand their interests, not narrow them. We make every effort to enable our students to participate in other activities.

I have no prior music training. Can I still be in the band?

YES! The 6th grade beginning band class is geared toward students with no prior musical training.

My family already has an instrument. May I use it?

Yes! However, the instrument you have may need repair in order to be in playing condition. While we usually honor these requests, you must remember that the instrument you have may not be the best choice for you.

What instruments are owned and provided by the school?

Baritones and french horns, due to their high purchase cost, are provided by the school. We also have a limited number of the other beginning instruments. The school-owned instruments are rented to students at the rate of $50 per year. This fee is used for annual maintenance and general repair of the instruments. If your family needs financial assistance providing an instrument, this may be your best solution. The band boosters can even scholarship up to half the rental fee if needed. Contact the director is necessary.

Why should I purchase an instrument if I’m not sure I will be in band next year?

Purchasing your own instrument is an option, not a requirement. We highly recommend the “rent-to-own” programs offered by local music stores. This is the best way to acquire an instrument for a beginning student. Once the student knows they will be continuing in the band, you can plan for the investment of owning a quality instrument.

What if my parents cannot afford an instrument?

NO STUDENT WILL EVER BE TURNED AWAY FROM THE BAND PROGRAM FOR FINANCIAL REASONS. If your family needs assistance securing an instrument for you, have them contact the band director. All financial matters will be completely confidential.
